Hailing from Lipanimal-3 in Bara, Jitendra Prasad Sonar was born on November 30, 1969. He is the son of Laxmi Sah (l) ?and Sudama Devi Sonar. He holds a Master's Degree from Humanities Faculty.

He came into politics in 1986 by joining CPN-UML but defected to Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) in course of the Madhes movement in 2007.

In CA Election-2008, Sonar was elected from Bara-4 with 9,624 votes. His closest opponent was Mahmood Aalam of CPN-UML who received 8,453 votes while Farmullah Mansoor of NC came third with 8,353 votes. Joint general secretary of TMDP, Sonar served as chairman of Development Committee of the parliament. He also worked as member of the CA's Committee on Natural Resources, Financial Rights and Revenue Sharing.

He was more active in the last CA representing regional parties based in Madhes.
