Born in Kathmandu's Lagan on November 1, 1951, Dr. Keshabman Shakya is the President of Nepa Rastriya Party. Son of Aashakaji Shakya and Purnamaya Shakya, Dr. Shakya earned a PhD on Forest Management Economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the US in 1987.
Having served as undersecretary at the Department of Soil Conservation and Watershed Management, Dr. Shakya was also appointed as vice-chairman of Lumbini Development Trust. He became the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology in the government led by Dr. Baburam Bhattarai. He was also associated with CPN-UML for some time. Later in 2008, he played a crucial role in forming Nepa Rastriya Party with the objective of securing political rights of the Newars. He is the founding president of the party, which managed to send one member to the CA in 2008 via PR electoral system. Dr. Shakya is contesting from Kathmandu-9 in the CA Election 2013.
Before joining active politics, Dr. Shakya has played pivotal role in forming the Federation of Indigenous Nationalities and became the founding secretary of the organization. He is also the founding general secretary of Newa Dey Daboo, the national organization of the Newars. In the social sector, he has the experience of leading the projects funded by the international cooperation bodies of the UK, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. His areas of expertise are rural and social development and local self-governance.
Shakya is also a renowned figure in Nepalbhasa literature. He is known for his poems, fiction and translations, and was felicitated with 'Shrestha Sirapa', the most prestigious literary award in Nepalbhasa.
He has two sons.
