Hem Lal Sharma (Himal) was born on April 24, 1972 in Kusmisera-1, Baglung. A father of two sons and a daughter, Himal Sharma is the son of Nanda Lal and BedKala Sharma. He holds Master's Degree in Political Science and Sociology. He is contesting from Kathmandu-6 in the CA Election 2013 representing UCPN-Maoist.
He was arrested in 1987 at the age of 13 years in the course of teacher's agitation, which encouraged him to join politics. He was jailed for three years in 1992 in connection with the death of a police inspector. The court verdict had sentenced him to life with confiscation of his property. However, his sentence was revoked in 1995 and was released.
He was made to disappear by the state in 2004 for 27 months and was released from Nakkhu Jail in 2007. He has been jailed for 10 years on multiple occasions in course of his political career. He took the membership of CPN (Masal) while he was in jail in 1988.
Elected as Dhaulagiri Zonal president of ANNFSU (Sixth) in 1995, Sharma quit CPN (Masal) after some time to join CPN-UML. In 1997, he became the central treasurer of ANNFSU, the student wing of CPN-UML. He, however, left the UML after the party unification between UML and CPN (ML) and joined the CPN (Maoist).
He became the secretary of the Maoist student wing ANNISU (Revolutionary) in 2002 and general secretary for two terms in 2004 and 2011. Currently he is a central member of UCPN-Maoist and Free Student Union chairman of the Tribhuvan University.
