One of the senior leaders of Nepali Congress, Umakanta Chaudhary was born on August 31, 1966 in Amaaw-3, Bara. Born to Chandrika Prasad Chaudhary and Madheshiya Devi Tharuni, Chaudhary has earned a Master's Degree in Botany. He joined politics in 1980 and became central member of Nepal Student Union-the student wing and Nepal Tarun Dal-the youth wing of Nepali Congress.

He was elected from Bara-5 in CA Election-2008 with 15,487 votes. Balbir Prasad Chaudhary (CPN-UML) came second with 14,857 votes with Tapeshwar Raya receiving 6,231 votes. Earlier, he was elected from Bara-1 in 1999 parliamentary elections. Having held various portfolios in the government on many occasions, Chaudhary's recent induction to the government came as Minister for Health and Population. He was also appointed as Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives.

He has three daughters and one son.
